Tretinoin is a derivative of vitamin A.
Tretinoin Uses
- Used in the treatment of mild to moderate acne.
- Used to help heal sun damaged skin
- As a retinoid, it regulates growth and differentiation of epithelial cells. It can be used to help enhance the effects on Minoxidil. Evidence suggests that a combination of Tretinoin(0.025%) and Minoxidil(0.5%) promotes hair growth. Tretinoin can aid in absorption of other chemicals like Minoxidil by thinning the upper layer of skin for deeper penetration into the scalp.
Mechanism of Action
Tretinoin regulates epithelial cell growth and differentiation. It increases percutaneous absorption by affecting the fluidity and the lipid composition of cell membranes. It also promotes angiogenesis, or the formation of new blood vessels.
Side Effects
The typical side effects of tretinoin are photosensitivity and skin irritation. More sensitive patients can experience scaling, itching, and burning. One should allow for a gradual increase til you reach your required dosage. This will lessen any side effects one might experience. You should always use this drug under the care of a physician. Try to wear a sunblock if going outside to prevent sunburn, care should be taken to protect treated skin from overexposure to UV light.
