Savin Scale for Female Diagnosis
Developed by Dr.Savin and Dr.Tranick from Yale University and Upjohn pharmaceuticals, respectively. The scale was originally developed specifically for women to classify their hair loss patterns with androgenic alopecia.
Hair specialists today use the Savin scale along with the Ludwig scale. For all intents and purposes, both are identical except that the Savin also measures overall thinning.
From the illustrations below, you can see the eight crown density images reflect a range from no hair loss to severe hair loss. You rarely see density 8 in clinical practice. There is also an example of frontal recession illustrated which is not too common among women.
Today there are actually 4 scales in use for women by different doctors. These are the Savin scale, Ludwig Scale, Olsen Scale, and Ebling-Rock Scale. The pharmaceutical companies usually rely on the Savin while conducting trials for treatments to female hair loss.
